Hence or otherwise

"Hence" gives the easy path. "Otherwise" lets you use any valid method. You earn the same marks either way — but easier with hence.

Definition

When you see "hence or otherwise", the previous part of the question hints at the easiest method. You are allowed to use a different approach, but if "hence" works, use it — it is usually the fastest. "Otherwise" is the safety net if you cannot see the connection.

Example

Hence or otherwise solve 2sin(x) + 1 = 0. Hence: rearrange to sin(x) = −½ and use known angles. Otherwise: any valid trig method.

Common confusion

Many students think "otherwise" forbids using the previous answer — it does not. It just permits a different method.
