The student lost just 1 mark from the arithmetic slip in (a), but still earned 4 marks across (b) and (c). That's a strong recovery — entirely because the working was visible at every step. Had the student written only the final answer for each part, the marker would have no basis for awarding ECF.
This is why abandoning a question halfway through because part (a) went wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes in GCSE maths. Keep going. Use your answer and work through the rest.
Common Mistakes Students Make
- Rubbing out working when the answer looks wrong. This is the single costliest error. Leave every line of working on the page — it may still earn M marks even if the final answer is wrong.
- Writing only the final answer on multi-step questions. A bare answer earns zero marks if it's wrong. The M marks only exist in the working.
- Not stating the formula before substituting. Writing "= ½ × π × 25" without first writing "area of semicircle = ½πr²" makes it harder for the examiner to award the M1 at the formula stage.
- Collapsing two method steps into one. If you do too much mentally, the examiner cannot see the individual M marks being earned. Write each step as its own line.
- Stopping after a wrong answer in part (a). Students assume that if part (a) is wrong, parts (b) and (c) are lost. They're not — ECF rules mean correct method on your own wrong figures still earns marks.
Exam Tips for Method Marks
- Write every step, even obvious ones. "I simplified 60/100 to 3/5" is worth writing. Examiners can only award marks for what is on the page.
- State the formula first for every standard topic. Pythagoras: c² = a² + b². Trigonometry: sin θ = opposite / hypotenuse. Volume of a prism: V = area of cross-section × length. Write it, then substitute — the M1 is almost always at the formula stage.
- Cross out, don't erase. A single neat line through a wrong attempt leaves it readable. Examiners can still award an M mark from crossed-out working if it shows the right method.
- AQA's mark schemes often specify "M1 for a complete method" — meaning every step must be shown. Edexcel and OCR work similarly. For longer questions, treat each mark as a separate step that needs its own line.
