Command Words

Calculate

Work out an exact value using the given numbers. Show your method.

Definition

"Calculate" expects an exact answer to the required precision (rounding only at the final step). Show every working step — the marks are usually split between method and final answer.

Example

Calculate 4 × (3 + 5). Method: 4 × 8 = 32. Answer: 32.

Common confusion

Skipping the working — even with a correct answer, you can lose method marks.
